Painting Advice

1. Starting Your Project

The first thing you need to do when painting a kitchen is find the right colors that work in your space.

If you want to add warmth, go for lively colors that brighten up the area, like Burnt Red.

Choose a bright color for an accent wall and then create balance by choosing a cooler paint color for the cabinets.

2. Choose Your Paint

When it comes to learning how to paint a kitchen, you need to have the right paint.

Choose paints that are made to last and offer a quality look while also being washable. We suggest PPG Timeless Interior Paint & Primer for one coat* coverage in 1,000 colors.

3. Getting The Right Sheen

Grease marks and food spatter is a usual thing in the kitchen but can spoil the look of your kitchen walls in no time.

When choosing the type of paint, you need to pick the right sheen for easy maintenance.

For kitchens, we recommend a semi-gloss sheen to create an easy-to-wipe finish on the walls.

5. Prep the Kitchen

Remove anything that interferes with painting:

  • curtains

  • wall hangings

  • utensil racks

  • stools

  • tables

  • chairs

  • carpets

Ensure that the wall surfaces are wiped down and free from dust.

Clean grease marks and repair holes using caulk.

Use masking tape/painter's tape to cover areas like trim and window frames so they won't get splattered with paint.

6. Paint Your Walls

With the paint and surfaces ready, work from top to bottom. If painting the ceiling, paint it from one corner to the other.

For the walls, use a brush to cut in, especially around cabinets. Dip the brush half way in to the paint can and wipe off the excess paint on the edgess of the can. Hold the brush at the base and apply a little pressure to brush gently.

You can use a roller for the main areas of the ceiling and walls. Roll the roller back and forth on the tray to cover it with paint. Remove excess paint by wiping over the ridges of the tray. Paint with even strokes to ensure uniform coverage.
